Shirley Coates Holder

Shirley, age 92, joined the love of her life, Kenneth, in Heaven on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. She was a resident of Springfield, LA. Shirley was a woman of strong Christian faith, a loving family member, and a devoted servant to others. Her family was her world, and she treasured the time she spent with those she loved. Shirley was a two-time graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. She earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education before returning to pursue her Master’s plus 30 degree in Guidance and Counseling. Shirley travelled the United States training educators in programs she developed for Louisiana that were adopted nationwide. Migrant education was especially close to her heart and remained one of her greatest passions. Shirley believed in giving back and volunteered whenever she could, including with hospice and counseling. She found joy in caring for others and offering comfort and encouragement to those around her. Shirley loved music, traveling, and attending festivals. She was also known for her wonderful collection of hats and was rarely seen without one, a signature part of the vibrant woman she was. Shirley leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, compassion, and service. She touched countless lives through her family, career, friendships, and generosity. Shirley will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her daughter, Nedra Holder; son, Bradley Holder; grandchildren, Caitlin Holder, Jacob Holder; and numerous extended family members. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth G. Holder; twin sons, Barry Wayne Holder and Rodney Dean Holder; parents, Arthur Ellis Coates and Evelyn Stewart Coates; and siblings, Billie Jean Smith and Valmond Coates. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the newly established Shirley Holder Scholarship for Education Fund. Hammond, LA 70401 on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Jerusalem Church Cemetery.
