Oscar "Johnny" K. Stewart

Oscar “Johnny” Stewart, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A native of Baptist and a longtime resident of Albany, Louisiana, Johnny lived a life defined by service, hard work, and love for his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 21 years as a Sergeant First Class, serving as a radar technician and instructor. Following his military service, Johnny began a second career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a mail carrier for 21 years before retiring. To know Johnny was to know a man with a generous heart. He loved cooking jambalaya for family and friends, and his jambalaya became well known throughout the state. He also enjoyed fishing, cheering on LSU, and had a special love for all animals. Above all else, Johnny’s greatest joy was his family. The love he had for them was evident in everything he did, and the memories he created with them will be treasured forever. Johnny is survived by his children: Lawrence Stewart (Diane), Betty Cain (Jimmie), Peggy Marshall, Mary Stewart, Ronald Stewart (Gwen), and Carol Sullivan (Ricky); his grandchildren: David Marshall (Frances), Blake Sullivan (Lida), Michael Henderson, Victor Sullivan, Ashley Foster (Nathan), Matthew Stewart (Savannah), and Amy Stewart (John Decker); his great-grandchildren: Sydney Henderson, Grason Henderson, Addison Henderson, Connor Sullivan, Luke Marshall, Eli Foster, Owen Foster, Logan Sullivan, Claire Sullivan, and Henry Decker; his brother, Eddie “Push” Stewart (Janice); his sister, Christine Herring; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Edmond Harris, all of whom will forever cherish his memory. Johnny was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sumiko Stewart; his parents, Eldridge and Elvie Stewart; his brothers, DeWitt Stewart, Wilmer “Spunk” Stewart, Lawrence Stewart, and William Stewart; his sisters, Ada Cox, Ellen Watts, Olivia Hutchison, Louise Travis, and Helen Johnson; his brothers-in-law, Donald Herring, Kermit Hutchison, and Edward Cox; his sister-in-law, Catherine Stewart; his son-in-law, David J. Marshall; and many cherished nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Tina Graham and Crystal Ratcliff, our wonderful caregivers from Home Instead, for the loving care they provided to our father. They treated him with kindness, respect, and warmth, and became like family throughout this journey. We will always be grateful for the compassion and friendship they shared with him. Pallbearers will be Michael Henderson, Blake Sullivan, Victor Sullivan, Trey Coats, T. Butch Coats, and Michael Trant. Honorary pallbearers will be David Marshall and Jimmie Cain. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Highway 190 West, Hammond, Louisiana 70401, on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at New Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
