Albert "Sonny" Starkey

Sonny, age 83, went to his Heavenly Home on Monday, April 6, 2026. He was a resident of Ponchatoula, LA. Sonny proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his military service, he built a long and respected career with Entergy as a Lineman. Even in retirement, Sonny wasn’t one to slow down. He went on to work with Ferrera Fire Apparatus, wiring fire trucks and later delivering them across the country. He truly enjoyed the work and took pride in knowing he was helping support firefighters and communities everywhere. His heart for service was most evident in his more than 40 years as a firefighter with the Springfield Fire Department. He was presently the President of the Volunteers. Sonny gave selflessly of his time and energy, always ready to help those in need and standing as a steady presence for his fellow firefighters. Sonny also worked as a volunteer with MADD. Above all, Sonny was a man of deep and abiding faith. As a deacon at French Corner Baptist Church, he lived out his beliefs with compassion and a servant’s heart. He also served as a Sunday School Director and Music Director at other churches. His faith guided the way he loved others and the way he lived each day. Sonny found joy in being outdoors, going camping, and spending time in God’s creation. But nothing brought him more happiness than being with his family. Sonny especially cherished his children and grandchildren, who were the light of his life and brought him endless pride and joy. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steady presence, and the love he gave so freely. His life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his memory will be treasured forever. He is survived by his wife, Suzann Starkey; daughters, Debra Daura, Barbara Sibley (Ken), Sandra Rawls (Bud), Diana Porter (Andre), Joy Winburn (Chester), Cynthia Boé (Kirk); sisters, Gayle Watts, Andrea McCon (Don), Wanda Starns (Alfred), Bug Glascock (Rodney); brother, Glynn Starkey; grandchildren, Brian, Dawn, Mark, Diane, Kimberly, Mary Ellen, Stephanie, Ches, Ricky, Ashley, Nicole; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Sonny is preceded in death by his wives, Mary Starkey then Mitsie Starkey; and parents, George and Georgia Starkey. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Woodland Baptist Church in Springfield, LA on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Bro. Paul Taylor and Bro. Eric Hattaway will officiate with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
