February 19, 1940 - January 29, 2022
Jackie, age 81, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, January 29, 2022. He was a lifelong resident of Livingston Parish. Jackie co-founded and managed Smith and Purvis Floor Covering in Hammond, for over 30 years until his retirement. He was creative, gifted, and talented in many things. He built houses, furniture, and cabinets. He repaired cars, trucks, heavy equipment, almost anything mechanical and if he couldn’t find the part, he’d make it himself. He was a wonderful cook who made the best biscuits. Jackie was a generous, loyal and faithful friend. He loved to turkey hunt with many of them. He was always ready with a helping hand for whoever needed it. He helped so many people in ways, about which we will never know. Jackie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who is already dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Jackie is survived by his loving wife of 64 wonderful years, Virginia Glascock Purvis; daughters, Tamra Perise (Sal), Sharmon Thompson (Mark), Lesley Sherman (Brent); son, Jackie Purvis Jr. (Gwen); grandchildren, Jacob (Tina), Josh (Kayla), Bridget, and Blane Purvis, Joni Lexia (Ray), Ryan Perise, Lauren Ganucheau (Edmond), Justin, and Madelyn Thompson, Garrett (Taylor) and Meghan Sherman; brother-in-law, Gene Glascock (Joy); great-grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Jonah, Jeremiah, Johannah, Carson, Camryn, Bryson, Blaze, Jaden, Jace, and Hayes; sister, Kay Gersch; two very special nephews, Polk Glascock and Joe Gersch, Jr.; along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Jackie is preceded in death by parents, Hulie Roy and Ruby Purvis; brother, Jesse Monroe Purvis and his wife Betty; sister, Colleen Purvis Foster and her husband Charles; brother-in-law, Joe Wayne Gersch; nephews, Hulie Ray Purvis and Paul Douglas Purvis. The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Ducombs, Bridgeway Hospice, and especially Sandra Bankston for their tender care of our father. To daddy’s many, many friends, some of them lifelong, we would like to say that daddy treasured each of you and your love and support has meant more to us than we will ever be able to put into words. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a visitation from the Chapel of Brandon Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Hwy 190 West, Hammond on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until the start of the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Mike Eden will officiate with interment to follow in Bankston Cemetery.
