Pamela Vonna Canik

Pamela Vonna Canik, aged 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on August 23, 2023. She was born on June 28, 1949 in Batesville, Arkansas. She grew up in a large family, with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles. After graduating from Violet Hill High School in 1967, she pursued a nursing career and received her LPN license. She worked as an operating room technician until she retired in 2010. Around 1987 she met Paul, they married in 1991 and moved to his home of South Louisiana. She enjoyed learning the Cajun way of life and how to cook the many dishes. Pam enjoyed, nursing, gardening, fishing, cooking, do-it-yourself projects, garage saleing, and reading the newspaper. She loved her hummingbirds, windchimes, anything outside, but the thing she loved most of all was being Mimi to her grandbabies. Pam and Paul were inseparable. They spent all their time together, from boating and living on the river in the early years to “farm life” in the more recent. You could always find her piddling with her plants or some project around the house. Pam is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Paul Canik, her children, Kim Lopez (Richard), Krista Verser, Jason Canik (Meghan), Jennifer Green (Randy), Amy Province (Quentin) and Zachary Canik (Kayla). She leaves behind 14 grandchildren; Justin Verser and Parker Jank, Sadie Short, Taylor Vera and Kaleb Alvarado, Amelia Canik, Gracie, Natalie and Shelby Green, Jackson, Savannah and Hudson Canik, Baker and Grey Province and 7 great grandchildren. Her sister Pat Billingsley, husband Steve and their two daughters, cousins, Dean and Marilyn Batterton, Kohn Batterton, Tammy Ketchum and her stepbrother Jimmy Hall. Brandon, Rachel, Rowan, Brooks and Walker Province were as close as family as well. She is preceded in death by her father, James Vaughn Gaston (Franklin, AR), her mother, Mona Phillips Coker (Day, AR), Stepmother, Willene Gatson, her stepbrother, Steve Heston, and her in-laws Ferdinand and Claire Canik. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations please be made to "Go Red For Women" or "St. Jude Children's Research Hospital". Visitation will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 10am-12pm, with a funeral mass at noon, at Brandon Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Hwy 190, Hammond, La 70403.
