John Daniel Coyne

John (Johnny) Daniel Coyne was a man of many things within his time on earth. Johnny was an excellent family man, a friend to many, a musician known best for his banjo and mandolin and most importantly a man of faith. He fervently prayed without ceasing, knowing that his God will hear his words. He passionately aligned with God and His will, fighting his battles and worries on his knees. A true man of God. He was born on September 27, 1949, raised in Covington, LA and a resident of Ponchatoula, LA. He passed away in the early morning hours of December 21, 2023, trading his earthly life for his eternal life. One would find it difficult to try to put into words the legacy Johnny left here on earth, for the memories and moments and fruitfulness flowed immensely all through the days of his life and thereafter. At 20 years old, he chased his love, Glenda to Arizona where they got married and after returning home to Louisiana, lived a full life together for 54 years. They raised 3 children: Kipphi Egnew (Emmett), Kelli Blades (Brandon), and John (Bubba) Coyne (Kim.) His greatest joy in life was to pass on the love of Jesus to his loved ones, especially his grandchildren: Brenna (Rob), Kayla, Emily (DJ), Brittney (Jared), Monique (Alex), Valerie (Justin), Gabrielle (Casey), Blake (Kaitlyn), Brennen, and Bret (Gabrielle) and great grandchildren: Madison, Kyle, Chelsi, Drew, Brantley, Emerson, Kelslyn, Weston, Emmett, Zayden, TJ, Evangeline, Dale “D”, Sawyer, Oliver, Jacob and Ezra. Never did a day pass him by without praying for each of his grands; lifting them up by name within his prayers. He is survived by his siblings who loved their big brother greatly, Jack Coyne (Kathy), Janie Revere (Roger), Jimmy Coyne (Carol), and Herbie Coyne. He retired from being Head Welder at SLU, where during his work years he was brought to the attention of the public because of his passionate efforts to save musical instruments he found discarded in the dumpster. He fixed the instruments, taught his fellow workers to play, and the Dumpster Band was recognized by the local press. He enjoyed his retirement at his beloved swamp home near Selser’s Creek and continued playing music with his family, known as Mama’s Family, where they played for nursing homes as an act of kindness to cheer up those residents. He was met at the Pearly Gates by his loving parents August and Willie Knight, Hebert and Shirley Coyne and in-laws Leo and Nadine Guedry and met his great granddaughters: Olivia and Kate Fayard. He is preceded in death by grandparents: Ed and Katherine Coyne, Newman and Dovie Hicks + several aunts, uncles, cousins, and one niece, Stephanie Gilchrist. His service will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at The Ridge Church: 44291 W. Pleasant Ridge Rd. in Hammond, LA. Visitation starts at 11am, service begins at 1pm led by beloved family friend, Pastor Ron Allen. Fellowship to follow. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” -2 Timothy 4:7-8
