Herbert "Shinker" J Hughes

Herbert J. “Shinker” Hughes Shinker went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. He was born on September 7, 1933 and passed away at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving family at his residence in the town of Livingston, Louisiana. Shinker was proud of his faith in the Lord and often stated in simple faith, “My life is in His hands. He is in control of when I go, and I know I am going to be with Him when I die.” Shinker was a longtime member of 61 years of the Local 198 as a pipefitter, plumber, and welder. After retiring in 1984, he continued to stay busy with hay farming with his tractors that he loved, and also raising his vegetables in his garden that he would share with his family and friends in his community. He loved the Lord and his many friends at the First Baptist Church of Livingston. Shinker was an avid deer and rabbit hunter and loved his beagle hunting dogs. His incredible skill with turkey hunting allowed him to be inducted into the Tri-Parish Turkey Hall of Fame. He was always joking and teasing and had a passion to help others while expecting nothing in return. It was often humorous to hear his pronunciation of some words, and it was impossible to be with him without smiling and laughing. Shinker touched many lives and will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends. Shinker is survived by his daughters, Janice Hughes Klippert and husband Bob, Sheila Hughes Jones and husband Derral, De’Ette Hughes Ross, Tammy Hughes Rowe and husband Keith; son Herbert Michael “Mike” Hughes and wife Terry Erdey Hughes; sister, Joyce Hughes Smith; brother, Steve Hughes and wife Dollie Kimball “Dollie Dean” Hughes; grandchildren, Ashley Neil Smith, Travis Wayne Rooker, Trish Smith Mack and husband Jeremy, Stephanie Rooker Luster and husband Donny, Lauryn Hughes Coburn and husband Tanner, Chase Michael Hughes and wife Brittney, Adam Stephen Rowe and wife Sarah, Bette-Brooke Ross, Brett Joseph Ross; great-grandchildren, Cole Robert Luster, Cole Russell Mack, Lexi Nicole Mack, Whitney Ashlyn Smith, Fisher Kenneth Coburn, Cullyn Deann Coburn; and many nieces and nephews that referred to him as “Uncle Herb”. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Betty Griffin Hughes; parents, Ellis Fielden Hughes and Irene Ouber Bourque and “Papa” Wallace Stafford; brother-in-law, J.W. Smith; granddaughter, Julie Deann Rowe, whom he loved and help take care of her during her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at the First Baptist Church of Livingston on Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The visitation will resume on Friday at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Bro. Tim Norris will officiate and interment will follow in Gateway Gardens Memorial Park in Livingston. Pallbearers will be: Ashley Smith, Chase Hughes, Adam Rowe, Brett Ross, Jeremy Mack, tanner Coburn, Stevie Hughes, and Ellis Hughes. Honorary Pallbearers are: Robert Lewis, Aaron Hughes, Monroe Wheat, Herbert “Wimp” Ballard, Richard Harrison, and Keith Smith. Very special friends are: Kenneth “Red” and Edna Jean Severio, George and Gladys Blades, Troy Severio, Daisy Duffy, and Bryant V. “Buck” Grantham.
