Davis Smith

Davis L. Smith passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on October 30,2022 at 4:30 p.m. He was born on July 7, 1940, in Belair Cove, Louisiana, and lived in Ville Platte. He grew up in the country picking cotton and working in the fields. His first language was Cajun French. At the age of 18, he made his way to New Orleans. He bussed tables at Antoine’s while attending welding school. He worked 3 jobs at a time to provide for his family. He worked on the river until he retired at 72 years old. He was a welder, supervisor, press operator. He repaired the barges of the Mississippi River. He could fix anything, make anything, garden, build, he did it all. He would help anyone, even if he went without. He was funny. You never left him without a smile. He would always try to feed you, either from the kitchen (he was an excellent cook) fruit from his trees, his latest praline, or popcorn ball concoction, or you might even get fresh eggs! He was a giver, always doing for others. He loved his chickens, his ducks, pigeons, and banty chickens. He mostly loved his family. He grew up poor, in a house with a dirt floor. He made his way in this world and was an Amazing Daddy, and Pop! Pop will be missed greatly, If you were lucky enough to know him, you loved him. He will be missed Greatly. He was a practical joker always being silly right up to the end. That smile, that laugh, were the light of life. He loved to talk on the phone when he could figure it out. In lieu of flowers: plant a tree in his yard, your yard, or in a forest. Plant a garden, plant something to grow and live, as he taught us to live and give. Always give back, love God, and lead by example as he did. We would like to thank Legacy Hospice: Kristi, Summer, Mahale and Dr. Stephen McCulloh. Also Albany Drugs for always being there too! He is survived by his Daughters, Suezanne Johna Smith, Angele S. Hay (Robert), Nicole S. Tregre (Darren); Sister, Carol S. DeRouen; Brother, John Wilton Smith; Grandchildren, Jade Hayes (Jason), Raven Weber (Nick), Magen Bonvillain (Derek), David Alex Goldmintz, Steven Leblanc (Paige); Great-Grandchildren, Hunter Hayes, Ashton Hayes, Jack Weber, Henry Weber, Declan Bonvillain, Finley LeBlanc and coming soon Fletcher Davis LebBlanc. Davis is preceded in death by his parents, Armance Vidrine Smith and Anzy Smith; Grandparents, Olivia Vidrine and Adam p. Vidrine; 18 Aunts with numerous uncles and cousins. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Hwy 190 W. Hammond, LA 70401, on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 4:00 p.m.
