Dr. Bonnie Jo Juve Meeker, RN, DNS

Dr. Bonnie Jo Juve Meeker, RN, DNS passed away February 20, 2024 at the age of 72. She was born at Baton Rouge General Hospital on October 14, 1951. Her family moved to the countryside near the Silver Creek community of McComb, MS where she spent her childhood running the fields and meadows barefoot, attending church services and going to school. When she was in 11th grade the family moved to Hammond, Louisiana where she and her four siblings would have had an opportunity to attend college. She attained her Bachelors degree in Nursing at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1973. She became an RN and worked at Baton Rouge General Hospital; Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, New York, and the Puerto Rican school system. She attained her Masters Degree in Nursing from Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, in 1989 and her Doctor of Nursing Science from Louisiana State University Center, New Orleans, in 1994. She started as an assistant professor at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1992 and worked her way up to the highest faculty rank of Professor in 2003. She retired in December 2018 after 25 years. She won various awards during her career including the School of Nursing Mentor Award, and the SLU School of Nursing Research Award. In 2002, she was awarded the Lucius McGehee Distinguished Professorship. She published articles in peer-review nursing journals, co-authored a nursing handbook, and did multiple local, regional, and international presentations. She lived a life of service to the university and her community. She was Chair of the School of Nursing’s Tenure and Promotion Committee and volunteered for several years at the Tangipahoa Voluntary Council on Aging. Bonnie had a unique sense of humor and loved riding around in her golf cart in Bay St. Louis, MS, with her Southeastern Louisiana University flags flying high. She will be remembered by many and missed by all who had the chance to know her. She is preceded in death by her son, Benjamin Carl Meeker Sr.; parents, Ray and Viola Juve; brother, Phil Juve; sister, Gwynne Juve Martin; and brother-in-law, Frank Fleming. She is survived by her grandson, Benjamin Carl Meeker Jr.; sisters, Janie Juve Norton (George), Debi Juve Fleming; nephews, Bill Juve (Alesha), Dustin Fleming, Brad Martin (Tiffany); nieces, Leah Norton, Allison Barnes (BB), and Cari Martin (Chris), and their children whom she loved. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing Scholarship Fund. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Graveside Service at Silver Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 8017 Silver Dr., McComb, MS. on Saturday, March 9, 2024 starting at 11:00 a.m.
